Our History
The RPI team began operating in the early 1990s within the group now known as Rainergy (at the time named Minicentrales Dos, S.A. and, later, Renewable Power International, S.A.), having developed, built, operated and financed wind, hydro and PV projects in multiple countries.
RPI has participated in the constitution and development of several investment platforms in the renewable energy sector, such as Rainergy (formerly Renewable Power International, S.A.), GEP or Citania, among others, with industrial and institutional partners, family offices and private investors such as Pennsylvania Power & Light, Cube Infrastructure, IST 3, Reichmuth and Hydrocontracting GmbH.
With current presence in Spain and Portugal, and previous experience in Poland, France, Chile and Croatia, we have developed a business model that integrates every phase of the renewable energy project lifecycle.
#Our Track Record
More than three decades of experience building a sustainable energy future.
Beginnings
Start of activities in the renewable energy sector as part of what is today Rainergy: construction and acquisition of the first mini-hydro plants and structuring of one of the first project finance transactions in Spain.
Midlands Electricity enters
Midlands Electricity Plc. acquires a 50% stake in Rainergy (then Renewable Power International, S.A.).
PPL enters and first bond
Pennsylvania Power & Light (PPL) acquires Midlands Electricity Plc's stake in Rainergy. First 'project bonds' issuance in the European market: a 28-year bond with an AAA/Aaa credit rating provided by AMBAC.
Hydrocontracting and second bond
Hydrocontracting GmbH acquires PPL's stake in Rainergy and contributes the Portuguese company Hidrocentrais Reunidas, S.A., owner of 7 small hydropower plants in Portugal. Second 'project bonds' issuance: a 30-year bond also rated AAA/Aaa by MBIA.
International expansion
Four family offices join the Rainergy Group's shareholding to finance its international expansion in Poland, France, Chile and Croatia.
Investment with Cube I
First joint investment with Cube Infrastructure (Fund I, €1.08 billion) in the acquisition of Rainergy (formerly Renewable Power International, S.A.), followed by the acquisition of several mini-hydro plants and the construction and commissioning of a wind farm.
Citania IPR and bond restructuring
Establishment of Citania IPR, with RPI contributing 20% of its equity, alongside private investors for the acquisition and operation of regulated renewable energy projects. Restructuring of both bond issuances following regulatory changes in Spain and Portugal, and execution of one of the first 100% 'merchant' financings in Spain.
Establishment of Green Energy Platform ("GEP")
Creation of GEP together with Cube's Fund II, with RPI retaining a 10% stake.
Sale of Rainergy
Sale of Rainergy (formerly Renewable Power International, S.A.) to Reichmuth, IST 3 and WSC, with RPI holding a stake in its equity and providing O&M and Asset Management services.
Sale of Citania
Sale of 100% of Citania IPR to a Spanish fund.
